According to Omdia's preliminary survey, shipments of large-size panels in the second quarter of 2021 will be 236 million, a quarterly decrease of 1%, while the shipment area will continue to grow, with a quarterly increase of 2%.
From the perspective of shipment ranking, BOE has a market share of 32% and is firmly the market leader. Innolux and AUO are ranked second and third, with market share of 16% and 14% respectively.
Omdia said that shipments of large-size panels in the second quarter continued to grow compared to the same period last year, but the quarterly growth slowed. The area is approximately 53.097 million square meters, an increase of 2% compared to the previous quarter and an annual growth rate of approximately 7%. In the second quarter, shipments and area of tablet PC panels over 9-inches decreased by 16%, while shipments and area of other applications continued to grow.
Demand for laptops, monitors and TV panels continued to be strong, leading to continued increases in panel prices in the second quarter. Logistics and delivery in Asia have encountered bottlenecks. Retailers and brands, especially North American and European markets, were still affected by insufficient inventory in the second quarter. Strong demand and tight supply of panel components have pushed up panel prices. However, the strong demand in the European and American markets may slow down in the second half of the year. Demand in emerging markets and mainland China is currently relatively flat. Omdia predicts that it will be difficult for the second half of 2021. Resume.
Different from the performance of shipments, thanks to the sharp increase in panel prices, the shipment revenue of large-size panels continued to grow in the second quarter, with a quarterly growth of about 8% and an annual growth rate of 53%. However, when the inventory replenishment of downstream retailers and brands comes to an end and the end market demand slows down, it is expected that the pressure on panel price cuts in the third quarter will increase significantly.
In terms of the performance of various panel makers, mainland panel makers have the highest market share in terms of shipment volume and shipment area, at 48% and 55%, respectively. Among them, BOE has the highest market share, reaching 32%, followed by Innolux’s 16% and AUO’s 14%.
